Packing

What to Pack for Charleston by Season

October 15, 2026 · The Fig House on Spring

Guests tell us the same thing after their first morning out: they wish someone had warned them about the sidewalks. Charleston is a walking city, and the oldest streets are cobblestone and brick that has shifted a little every year since the 1800s. So before we talk layers and umbrellas, know this. Comfortable, flat, well made walking shoes are the one thing you cannot skip, no matter the month.

The one non-negotiable: your shoes

From our front steps it is about an eight minute walk to King Street, and almost all of it is on surfaces that punish a thin sole or a narrow heel. Cobblestones eat heels for lunch. Every season, a guest sets out for dinner in something lovely and comes back carrying it. Bring shoes you can walk a few miles in and still feel good, then build the rest of your outfit around them. Charleston is dressy in an easy, lived in way, so a clean sneaker or a sturdy flat reads perfectly fine at even the nicer tables.

Spring and fall: the easy seasons

If you are here in spring or fall, you have picked the sweet spot, and packing is simple. Days are warm and comfortable, mornings and evenings carry a light cool, so layers are your friend. Think a light jacket or a wrap you can carry out to the piazza for coffee and shed by lunch. A short sleeve under a cardigan or overshirt covers almost every hour of the day. You can walk from the house to a cafe like Babas on Cannon in the morning and still be comfortable wandering King Street by afternoon without fuss.

Summer: breathable everything, plus an umbrella

Summer in Charleston is hot and humid, and it is lovely if you dress for it. The rule is breathable everything. Natural fabrics, loose cuts, light colors, a hat, and sunscreen you will actually reapply. Here is the local habit worth stealing: carry a compact umbrella even on a clear morning. A quick afternoon shower rolls through most summer days around four, and it is usually gone as fast as it came. We keep the piazza porch shaded and breezy for exactly those moments, so a sudden downpour is a fine excuse to sit, sip something cold, and wait it out before heading to dinner.

Winter: milder than you think

Winter here is mild, not the deep cold most visitors pack for. You will want a real jacket for the evenings and a layer for a breezy day by the water, but you are far more likely to reach for a sweater than a heavy coat. A scarf, one warm layer, and those same good walking shoes will carry you through a long day out and a short stroll back to a tapas spot like Malagon right on Spring Street.

A short every-season checklist

  • Broken in walking shoes, flat and well soled, the one thing you truly cannot skip
  • Layers you can add and shed as the day warms and cools
  • A compact umbrella, essential in summer and handy in any season
  • Sunscreen and a hat for the strong Lowcountry sun
  • One slightly nicer outfit for dinner, still built around shoes you can walk in
  • A reusable water bottle for long days on foot

Pack light, pack for the weather you are actually getting, and above all pack the right shoes. Do that and Charleston opens up to you on foot, which is the only way to really see it. We will leave the porch ready for whatever the sky decides to do.
