Charleston is an easy city for two people and a tricky one for eight. Hotel rooms cap at four, most historic rentals cap at six, and the restaurants everyone wants need notice. We host groups of six to eight every week, so here is the honest playbook.
The lodging math
For eight people downtown you're usually choosing between four hotel rooms or one house. Four rooms at Charleston rates adds up fast, and you lose the thing group trips are for, which is the morning coffee crowd in one kitchen. A three bedroom house that sleeps eight keeps everyone under one roof, and booking direct skips the platform service fees, which on a multi-night group stay is real money.
Book these before you pack
- Dinner for 6 or more at any buzzy Charleston restaurant. Two to four weeks out. Vern's, FIG, and Chubby Fish are the hardest tables.
- A group walking tour or a boat charter, one week out minimum.
- Sunday brunch anywhere. Charleston takes brunch seriously and so should your group.
A day that works for eight people
Big groups fall apart when every decision needs eight votes. Structure the anchors and free the middle. Coffee and pastries brought back to the house. One morning activity together, a walking tour or the market. Split up for lunch, everyone's happier. Regroup for an afternoon on the piazza. One reserved dinner. Then porch time, which is the whole point of Charleston.
Getting around
Park once and walk. From our corner of Cannonborough-Elliotborough nearly everything a visitor wants is under twenty five minutes on foot, and Upper King is eight. For the Battery loop or a Sullivan's Island day, ride shares split across eight people cost almost nothing per person.
One more thing. Assign one person to be the reservations captain before the trip. Group trips don't need eight planners. They need one person with the list above and a house where everyone actually wants to hang out.
